However, apart from the benefits of VoIP, there are some methods of implementing it that need to be understood. In general, there are two ways of implementing a VoIP system i-e. On-premises and Hosted (Cloud-based). Both of these methods operate as a Private Branch Exchange (PBX).

On-Premises PBX: To implement VoIP through on-premises PBX, you need all the hardware and equipment that is necessary for VoIP to be stored in the office. You will use IP phones to make calls and those IP Phones will be connected to PBX through a LAN connection.

Pros:

  • You can add open-source features easily
  • You can take control over the operating of your system
  • Back-up telephone lines through additional SIP trunk

Cons:

  • On-site expertise is needed for its maintenance
  • Can go for extra cost while calling out the technicians
  • Lack of support during the absence of manufacturer

Hosted PBX: Using this type of technique for installing small business VoIP can be easier for the company. It is the method where all the hardware is handled by a third party company. All the hardware, setup and maintenance is held by them. It can make it easier for the businesses to get started as well.

Pros:

  • Fast and Simple selection of numbers
  • Instant feature setup and deployment
  • Upgrades and patches are taken care of by the provider

Cons:

  • You need a fast internet connection for making calls
  • New feature releases and Bug fixes can be slow
  • Reliability depends upon the expertise behind providers
